A strong portfolio is crucial for content writers who are just starting out. However, not many have much in way of experience beyond their college credentials.

One way to build a great portfolio and get paid content writing gigs is by gaining free experience. Working for a nonprofit as a content writer can not only set you on the path to achieving your professional goals but also help make a difference in the world around you.

Some months ago, I made a decision to volunteer my time for a nonprofit, Tutoria, because I believe in their cause of connecting volunteer tutors with those who need help learning English.

Yes, I was nervous because this was the first time I was going to be working in a group, a social media team to be specific, but I was also excited for the learning opportunity.

For example, the Instagram creator has to come up with interesting infographics that will appeal to bilingual speakers — in this case, Spanish speakers.

Even though this may take several sessions to finalize, it is a great learning process for both the person creating the Instagram post as well as other members of the social media team.

This is but one example of several valuable skills I picked up in my capacity as a social media blogger for Tutoria. Some other skills include the following:

  • How to write promotional blogs that lead to conversions.
  • Work as a team to achieve content writing goals.
  • Learn how to interview professionals for blog posts.
  • Learn how to write engaging social media posts.
  • Learn how to use platforms such as Freedcamp, Trello, and Asana.

There is so much more to content writing than meets the eye and I wouldn’t have been able to land freelancing gigs if I hadn’t taken advantage of the opportunity to work as a social media blogger for a nonprofit.

If you are looking to kickstart your career as a social media blogger, then I highly recommend Tutoria.
